Planet Art is growing from strength to strength as proprietor of the Gallery Sudhanshu Paliwal sounds more enthusiastic than any other gallery owner in Delhi. Sudhanshu, an engineer by education and a management man by training has drifted into the field of art and music quite accidentally. But his kin sense of art coupled with his understanding of the market dynamics has given him an edge which is quite unique. During the month of November and december 2007, Planet Art remained the only profit making gallery in entire Delhi. While the market showed a general dowward trait, Paliwal's Planet Art showed positive growth in sales.

Though Planet Art has an impressive collection of senior artists like M.F Husain, Tyeb Mehta and even a rare Ravi Verma, Planet art stands out for finding out real forces of future. This is one area where most galleries fumble. While on an average most galleries in Delhi launches upto ten new artists every year, only few galleries have ensured constant growth of these new artists. This is where Paliwal stands apart.

He has launched this year young artist Anita Singh whose all the paintings sold on the first day itself. Then he had conducted an exhibition of rare works of Gopal Sanyal. Artist Devajyoti Ray has also engaged into a tie-up with the Planet Art. Some of the very important works of this artist can also be found at Planet Art.

The same day the Gallery will be organising an Art Camp sponsored by Planet Art. Art Afficionados might catch a glimpse of well known artists like Devajyoti Ray and Sudip Roy at the camp. Planet Art which has in recent past registered phenomenal growth even in the face of recession in the Art Market deserves all the credit for this wonderful new camp.

From 17th December Planet Art would also be holding a conceptual show of recent works of artists Devajyoti Ray, Manish Pushkale, Anita Singh, Chintan Upadhyay. A must see.

From 27th December, Lokayat Gallery will host an exhibition of Tribal Art forms. The festival will close everyday with the screening of international classic movies. This will include films by cult directors like Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, Lui Bunuel, Sergei Eisenstein, etc. Also ther would be a show of a documentary on the life and time of Mulk Raj Anand directed by Sarad Dutt.

Sovon Hazra is these days going great guns. Being one of the voting members of the Mulk Raj Anand Centre at hauz Khas, he has earned a niche for himself, participating in almost all inhouse activities of the Centre. Sovon, a master Tabla player had earlier tried to create for himself a place in the shaky world of Indian Classical music, but then found a more solid footing in the arena of fusion music.
Sovon's team consists of Vishal Mehta on drums, Neelranjan on guitar, Swapnamay on sarod, Manish on keyboard, Rajesh on flute and Sovon himself on tabla.
Sovon has widely been appreciated by the discerning audience and we hope he would do even better in future.

About the Artist:

Born in 1974, Devajyoti Ray is one of the emergeing talents in India. His first solo show abroad had induced the Southall IAC to call him as the "....face of new Indian art." And then in 2004, The Telegraph has described him as the most promising among the new generation of artists in India.
But all that had happened long time back. In the past two years Ray has grown from strength to strength with whirlwind tour of many countries and participations at important art events around the world. With 8 solo shows, 16 group shows and 4 major participations, Ray is today firmly established as an important artist for future to reckon.

Critics on Ray's art:

Artist on himself

I was born in 1974 in Bangalore. My father was a bureaucrat and was not even remotely connected to art. Though I was interested in art from childhood, he never wanted me to take up art beyond a hobby.

Sri BR Panesar, veteran artist was a colleague of my father. He used to come quite often to our house and due to my acute interest in art, he invited me to a show of the famous Society of Contemporary Artists. For the first time I was seeing the art of famous Indian artists like Bikash Bhattacharya, Paritosh Sen and Ganesh Pyne and of course Panesar himself. I was thoroughly excited. Since then I would visit many exhibitions.

Ours was a middle class family and it was truly difficult for us to think of taking up painting as a profession. The art materials used to be very expensive and to take up a full-fledged course in any art college for three years was unthinkable. I respected my father’s feelings and took up Economics at Presidency College, Calcutta. Mr Panesar knew that I was willing to learn painting and he knew my constraints. But he always pacified me by saying that the greatest artists of all time like Picasso, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Tagore, MF Hussain and Souza were all self-taught. Art, he said cannot be taught. It has to come from within.

But I was too grown up to be pacified by such words. With whatever money I could earn, I had started learning many art-related activities. I took up short courses in ceramic pottery, ceramic grain painting, photography, water-colour. And Mr Panesar himself took interest in teaching me collage making.

It was during this time that I used to visit the Academy of Fine Arts regularly and the Government College of Art and crafts. I used to observe the students painting and sculpting. Both Academy and the Government College had very free atmosphere; Anybody could get into the classes anytime as long as one did not disturb the others. Academy had an added advantage of being close to the Nandan Cinema Hall. I used to go and buy a cinema ticket and then, in the ensuing time between two shows I would spend my time in the Academy.

I came to Delhi in 1993 to study Economics at JNU. Simultaneously I took up course in Graphic designing. I also learnt sculpting for some time.

In 1999, I got into government job and this in one shot erased all my financial constraints. Now I could buy big canvas rolls and make paintings of any size, and use colours without thinking much.

I do not paint however to make any social commentary. I paint for the sake of art and art alone. My style is also more an academic style that experiments with colour and form and their interdependence and influence on each other. Pseudorealism is quite new in India and even in cities like Delhi and Bombay people are not very aware of this exciting new style. But I can percieve a slow acceptance of the style and in course of time with increasing globalisation, I am sure more people would take it up.
